WIN-J hosts symposium "Advancing nuclear energy harmonized with environment"

Outline

On December 9th 2006, WiN-J hosted a symposium entitled “Advancing nuclear energy harmonized with environment” in Aomori City, Japan. The symposium was designed for citizens to exchange information regarding effective use of energy from environmentally-friendly point of view, and around 500 people participated in this event.

Summary of Symposium

This symposium was staged in Aomori, where a nuclear power plant and fuel cycle facilities are located, and which plays an important role as environmentally-friendly and energy-pioneer city in Japan. Aomori is a center of various aspects of nuclear research, development and utilization. This region is clearly expected to serve an even greater role for nuclear power in Japan. In this regard, it is desired that the nuclear industry and the local communities bring together human and technological resources so as to co-prosper in the long term.

The program began with the opening remarks by Ms. J. Ogawa, the President of WiN-J, followed by a greeting speech by Mr. T. Ebina, deputy governor of Aomori Prefecture.

After the speech, keynote address was made by Ms. Y. Kawaguchi, Councilor and former Minister of Environment and Foreign Affairs, and pointed out the importance of our decision-making in preventing global warming.

For the panel discussion, Ms. D. Mouillot, the President of WiN-France, Mr. C. Uchiyama, an office-worker entertainer, and Ms. W. Tojima, Science journalist, were invited as panelists. The panelists delivered an excellent series of lectures followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session facilitated by Ms. J. Ogawa.

In addition, four female college students majoring in the nuclear energy field contributed as supporting member of staff, which helped us mentor the next generation and seek professional growth of women in nuclear energy field.

WiN-J contributed to enhancing the relationship of trust and mutual understanding among the citizens of Aomori and nuclear-related parties, and this activity was later reported as an article of To-o Nippo Press, local news paper in Aomori.
